Descendants of James POLLOCK

Notes

2. Alexander POLLOCK

BIOGRAPHY: The family of Alexander and Jean (Findlater) Pollock, who, with one daughter and five sons, left Scotland May 22, 1952, sailing from Greeneck in a sailing vessel, Stative Merse, and eight weeks later reached New York.  They arrived in Blossburg, PA on July 18, 1852.

BIOGRAPHY: The grave of Alexander's father  - James Pollock - can be seen at the Clachan of Campsie just north of Glasgow, just a little southwest of Sterling.  His mother, Christine Ormiston, of Ireland, is also identified on a tombstone there.  At the Pollok House in Glasgow, at the time I visited in a room towards the back of the second floor, a picture of the "Pollock Family Cemetery" can be seen.  As the Pollock House is a reference to the geographical location of Clan Maxwell territory, why the Clan Maxwell, of which the Pollocks are members, would refer to the Pollocks at all is a mystery to me at this point.

Margie B. notes, 2/04 - 2-6. ALEXANDER POLLOCK b. Dec. 2, 1809, chr. Dec. 18, 1809 Campsie d.Jan. 23, 1892, Wellsboro, Tioga Co., PA, USA
Married Jean FINDLATER on 18 May, 1832, by Rev. John Johnstone, Campsie and 1 Jun 1832 Glasgow, Scotland. Jean was born 16 Sep 1806 Govan parish, Glasgow,Scotland. Died Jan. 28, 1897, Houtzdale, PA, USA, at the home of a daughter. Both Alexander and Jean are buried at Wellsboro Cemetery, as are many of their children and grandchildren.

These are our family's ancestors. When Alexander was married in 1832 he was a laborer in Rountreefauld just outside Lennox Town on the main road.  Later he was listed as a collier (coal miner) of Lennox Town, which is about a mile from Campsie. First two children (Christian  (b. 1835) and Samuel (b. 1838) were born/baptised at Campsie.  Then they evidently moved to Passover, somewhere in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and had Alexander in 1840, then had James in 1842 in Gartsherrie and William, John and Andrew in Gartgill
from 1844 to 1847.  The latter two towns are very close together and are east of Glasgow and about 10 miles as the crow flies from Campsie.  Near Coatsbridge. There were coal mines there at the time,
so we presume Alexander continued to ply his trade in this field.  Perhaps the coal fields near Campsie were playing out.

I found conflicting stories about the Pollock's financial status in Scotland. One source said they were reduced to eating just oatmeal, and another said they were considered professionals, well educated, and secure financially. Alexander was sought out for the coal mining job in Pennsylvania with the Bloss Mining Co., and relatives believe the mining company paid their way over.  They came to the U.S.A.
with one daughter and five sons.  The group of eight left Scotland from Greenock on May 22, 1852, in the sailing vessel, Statira Morse, bound for New York. They arrived in Blossburg, PA on July 18, 1852.  It is said they returned to Scotland during the American Civil War, but then returned to Pennsylvania after the war.  The family story is that they were trying to avoid having their sons serve in the U.S. army.

On the passenger manifest for the Statira Morse, the family used the last name of ORMISTON for some unknown reason. Misunderstanding? Didn't want it known they were leaving? We speculate but will probably never find out why.  The children's names and ages agree
with the Pollocks.

Jean FINDLATER

CHRISTENING: May have beenb born 16 september, 1806.  Christening listed as 21 Septmner, 1806.

M. Bridges, 2/04 -Alexander and Christian Marr Findlater's children that
I have found in the IGI so far are (with the spelling

Janet Findlater, b. 18 Sep 1803 Gorbals, Lanark;

Elizabeth Finlatter,christened 14 Apr 1805
Gorbals, Lanark;

James and Helen Findlater, twins, born 5 Sep
1808 at Eastwood, Renfrew; and
Mary Finlator  b. 9 July, 1815, Gorbals, Lanark.

Note 1: Helen FINDLATER is the ggg grandmother of
Lorna McEWAN in Scotland (HarbourHou@aol.com) and we
have been communicating in the fall of 2001.  Helen
Findlater married William STEVENSON on 17 Oct 1837 in
the Gorbals and she was a dressmaker and he was a wood
sawyer. He was born about 1812. Helen died on 3 Nov
1889 at 2 Hemington St., Glasgow. They were parents of
seven children: William, 1839; Elizabeth, 1842; Helen
Findlater, b 1843; Christina Marr, b. 1845; Margaret,
b. 1846; Annie F., b. 1849; and Euphemia, b. 1852.
Lorna McEwen has shared a copy of her
Stevenson-Findlater family tree with me, and she has
traced many in this family down to the present.
Besides Stevenson, her family surnames have been
Fleming, Good, McCurdie, Stewart, Paterson, McEwan,
and MacLean.

Helen's twin, James FINDLATER,  died on 5 Sep 1876 at
6 East Campbell St., Glasgow. His occupation on his
death certificate was listed as hand loom weaver.  He
married Agnes BROWN. According to the IGI, they had
two children: Alexander, b. 1834, and John, b. 1836.
However, the informant on James' death certificate was
another son, Thomas Findlater, not found in the IGI.

DEATH: According to M. Bridges, "died -(one James Pollock died 26 Oct  1859 in Campsie. It could be him--or not.)

Elizabeth FINDLATER

M. Bridges 2/04 - Married (2) Elizabeth FINDLATER on 29 June 1845 at
Gorbals and 22 June 1845 at Old Monkland, Lanarkshire,
widow of Peter McNICHOL. Peter Jr. was the son of
Peter McNICHOL and Elizabeth McNichol. Peter Jr. and
Elizabeth Findlater (married 10 Dec 1831 at Gorbals,
Lanark) had a son named Nichol McNICHOL, chr. 12 May
1833 at Barony, Lanark (IGI). This may be the Nichol
McNichol who married Agnes ALEXANDER  on 9 Sept 1863,
died 1867 at Fall Brook, Tioga Co., PA aged 34. Buried
in Fall Brook cemetery. Strangely, the Register for
Births, Marriages and Deaths of Scotland has recorded
the birth of a son Nichol McNichol on 3 Mar 1868 at
Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland to Nichol McNichol and
Agnes Alexander also. (C116251--1855-1875, source
